AURORA, Colo. (July 22, 2013) - Bringing to close a season that began nearly 11 months ago, the 2013 NPL Champions Cup concluded Monday as 12 teams from 10 different clubs claimed national titles. The champions claimed their titles through group stage competition, semifinals and finals held July 18-22 at Aurora Sports Park in suburban Denver.
Leading the way with a pair of championships each were PDA (U-13 and U-15 boys) of the Northeast Pre-Academy League and CZ Elite (U-16 and U-17 boys) of the Pacific Developmental NPL. The two clubs share the distinction of being the first clubs to claim multiple NPL Champions Cup titles in the same year.
The Midwest Developmental League (St. Louis Scott Gallagher Metro U-14 boys and Michigan Wolves U-18 boys) also had two champions in the event, while teams from Mountain Developmental League clubs Colorado Storm Copa (U-13 girls) and FC Boulder (U-18 girls) also claimed titles.
Tualatin Hills United SC (U-14 girls), South Bay Force Black (U-15 girls), New York Rush (U-16 girls) and Lamorinda SC (U-17 girls) round out the remaining champions.
Three players from US Club Soccer’s 2013 id2 National Selection International Tour squad that faced FC Barcelona and Real Madrid academy teams took part in the NPL Champions Cup, including Tyler Adams (New York Red Bulls), Carlos Avilez (FC Dallas) and Josh Burnett (PDA).
The culminating event of the National Premier Leagues (NPL) season, the 2013 NPL Champions Cup included a total of 110 teams in the U-13 through U-18 boys and girls age groups representing all 17 member leagues in a true “champions league” competition. This year’s event also marked the addition of girls divisions.
An additional 18 teams claimed national titles Sunday at the National Cup XII Finals, the culminating event of US Club Soccer’s cup-based national championship competition. The National Cup XII Finals was held alongside the 2013 NPL Champions Cup in the Centennial State.
Among the highlights from the event was a visit by U.S. Men’s National Team legend Cobi Jones on Thursday, who was on-hand to speak with participants and sign autographs at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Tent. Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott, the Official Hotel of US Club Soccer, welcomed players, parents and fans to its promotional tent for giveaways and a chance to win tickets to a World Cup qualifier.
