CHARLESTON, S.C. (July 26, 2012) – More than 160 top teams from all across the United States are converging on Waukegan, Ill., where the National Premier Leagues (NPL) Champions Cup and National Cup XI Finals, US Club Soccer’s pair of national championship events, are scheduled to kick off Friday at Waukegan Sports Park.
Culminating the inaugural NPL season is the NPL Champions Cup, which will feature league champions from across the nation in the U-13 through U-17/18 boys age groups. Five NPL championships will be up for grabs at the event, which will draw to a close on Tues., July 31.
The NPL has been created to provide a unified, league-based national developmental platform with the highest level of competition in given geographic areas, and to elevate and change the competitive youth soccer landscape based upon fundamental principles outlined in US Club Soccer’s 10-year vision.
The National Cup XI Finals include champions in the U-13 to U-17 boys and girls age groups from Regionals held across the country. The event will conclude on Mon., July 30 with a total of 20 championships to be awarded.
National Cup XI Regionals ran from Memorial Day weekend through July 9 in advance of the Finals. A total of 121 teams were crowned Regional champions at the seven Regional events.
Among the teams competing this weekend will be West Coast SC Kryptonite ’95 (U-16 Girls Super Group), which claimed the U-15 Girls Super Group title last year at the National Cup X Finals in Boise, Idaho. In all, five finalists from the National Cup X Finals will make the trip to Waukegan with four of them looking to avenge championship-game losses.
