Eleven teams qualify for NPL Champions Cup via Gulf States Premier League Playoffs

2013 NPL Champions Cup | List of qualified teams

Last weekend’s Gulf States Premier League Playoffs marked the end of the season for the league, and the beginning of a new challenge for its champions.
Eleven teams earned league titles at the GSPL Final Four, held May 11-12 at Freedom Ridge Soccer Complex in Ridgeland, Miss., with the winners qualifying for the 2013 NPL Champions Cup, US Club Soccer’s league-based national championship competition. There, they’ll take on champions from the other 16 National Premier Leagues from July 18-22 at Aurora Sports Park in suburban Denver.
The GSPL playoffs showcased the stiff competition expected from an end-of-year showdown, as six titles were decided by one goal and three more came down to two-goal margins. The winners can now focus on the chance to represent their league on a national scale, building pride for the member clubs from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida panhandle.
“This championship weekend is the reason why these clubs joined the NPL,” Gulf States Premier League President Gary Buete said. “With the best teams from a four-state region competing, the games were competitive and entertaining, and all of the teams were excited about the stadium venues and the quality competition.”
Chicago Fire Juniors of Mississippi led the way with four titles, while Gulf Coast United FC and Chicago Fire Juniors of Louisiana notched two each. The Chicago Fire Juniors of Mississippi U-15 girls will look for another title to add to their collection, after winning a U-14 championship at National Cup XI last summer.
“The Gulf States Premier League champions are excited to represent their league in the NPL Champions Cup,” Buete said. “Although our league is in its infancy, we are excited for the opportunities that the NPL provides and are looking forward to continue growing our league and competitive base.”
Top teams from the other 16 NPLs will be waiting in suburban Denver, including recently determined winners from the Florida Premier League, Oregon Premier League,Washington State Premier League and Southern California NPL. Champions of other leagues will be decided this spring, and teams qualifying for the NPL Champions Cup will be updated here.
