CHARLESTON, S.C. (Sept. 18, 2014) - Top U-16 through U-18 National Premier Leagues (NPL) boys teams from across the country are invited to apply to the 2015 Jefferson Cup through automatic slots reserved for top NPL teams. The 2015 Jefferson Cup will be held March 6-8, 2015 in Richmond, Va.
The application deadline for applications for these NPL slots is Nov. 1. Jefferson Cup staff will confirm application acceptance by Nov. 15. Teams should apply through US Club Soccer here. Teams accepted into the Jefferson Cup through the NPL slots will participate in the regular Jefferson Cup tournament format.
Entering its 35th edition in 2015, the Jefferson Cup accepts more than 700 teams from all over the country every year, but because of its premier status, tournament officials turn down about 500 teams per year. This is the first year of this US Club Soccer / Jefferson Cup partnership, and a similar US Club Soccer partnership has already been announced with the San Diego Surf Cup for 2015.
Applications for the NPL slots at the Jefferson Cup are considered based on criteria such as 2013-14 NPL record, performance at US Club Soccer postseason tournaments and other notable competitions. Accepted teams will play a minimum of three games.
“This new relationship with US Club Soccer, the NPL and the Surf Cup only increases the value and experience of the Jefferson Cup Tournament Series,” Jefferson Cup Director Chris Friant said in a recent news release. “The Jefferson Cup and the Surf Cup are both outstanding events, and now NPL teams and players will have the opportunity to showcase their talents on both coasts on the best fields, in the best environments and in front of hundreds of college coaches.”
