CHARLESTON, S.C. (April 30, 2015) – A month ago, the Virginia NPL welcomed a pair of new clubs for the 2015-16 season. Now, the league continues its realignment with the addition of two more clubs: FC United and Virginia Soccer Association.
The total number of clubs remains at 12, though, because FC United is formed by merging two current member clubs that will no longer have travel teams: Chesapeake United SC and Churchland SC.
Both FC United and Virginia Soccer Association (VSA) will field U-11 through U-18 boys and girls teams. The clubs now associated with the Virginia NPL include:
|Annandale Boys & Girls Club||FC Virginia||Richmond Strikers|
|Chantilly Youth Association||Northern Virginia SC||Vienna Youth Soccer|
|Chesterfield United SC||Prince William Courage||Virginia Rush|
|FC United||Richmond Kickers||Virginia Soccer Association|
“It made sense that FC United continue to field teams in the Virginia NPL from the alliance formed between Churchland SC and Chesapeake United,” FC United Technical Director Matt Busch said. “Both clubs are already competing in the league, and now we have a deeper pool of players and are combining our talent.”
VSA Technical Director Matt Lacey said the decision to join the Virginia NPL was based on the league’s – and the overarching National Premier Leagues (NPL) – club-to-club model. “It allows our elite teams to be at the same place at the same time, which provides us with the perfect environment to monitor the development of our players and coaches,” Lacey said. “We look forward to working with other like-minded clubs to grow the game.
“VSA will provide the Virginia NPL a commitment to excellence on and off the field,” Lacey added. “With our acceptance into the NPL, we will provide quality competition, coaching, organization and facilities to work alongside other well-established clubs.”

Virginia NPL regular season champions in the U-13 through U-18 boys and girls age groups advance to the NPL Finals, where league-based national championships are awarded. The 2015 NPL Finals will be held July 9-13 at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.
The league is also taking advantage of all opportunities afforded by US Club Soccer and the NPL, as it prepares to host its second-ever Player Development Program (PDP) event, June 6 at the Capital Park Training Facility in Richmond, Va. It will target 2001-02 girls and 2002-03 boys. The Virginia NPL previously hosted a PDP in late January, from which several players were later invited to the last month’s id² Training Camp in Raleigh, N.C.
