Virginia NPL hosts first college showcase alongside PDPs

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Dec. 22, 2015) - The Virginia NPL hosted its first college showcase in conjunction with two Player Development Program (PDP) events, Dec. 19-20.

More than 40 Virginia NPL teams from U-17 and U-18 age groups competed in front of college coaches and scouts at the River City Sportsplex in Midlothian, Va. Saturday's PDP targeted 2003-04 boys, while Sunday's PDP targeted 2002-03 girls.

"Combining the PDP and showcase resulted in a fantastic weekend for our players," Mike Cullina, US Club Soccer Board of Directors member and Technical Director for Prince William Courage, said. "Providing a league event, where the focus can be on player performance and exposure outside of the league competition format was tremendous for our student athletes and coaches. The PDPs hosted by Virginia NPL continue to develop into a top identification and player development program. We are excited for future programming and expansion."

The Virginia NPL has tentative plans to expand the event and will host it again in 2016 at the River City Sportsplex.

During the PDPs, 40 of the area's top boys and girls trained under the direction of some of the top coaches in the Virginia NPL. "This was our first PDP to take a look at the new cycle of players," Matt Lawrey, Virginia NPL PDP Director, said. "We focused on two age groups for both boys and girls. The level was very competitive, and the players reacted well to the coaching staff and the environment. Thanks to the coaches and directors across Virginia for making this such a high level event for our players."
