CHARLESTON, S.C. (Dec. 1, 2014) - The NorCal NPL Fall College Showcase, held Nov. 22-23 in Modesto and Davis, Calif., again proved itself as an elite showcase event.
With more than 100 college coaches and Player Development Program (PDP) scouts in attendance, teams from five different states battled against new and old foes in a high-stakes environment. Girls teams competed for championships in Davis, while boys teams in Modesto fought for positioning in the upcoming spring Champions League.
Eventually, the winners of the boys Champions League will represent northern California at the 2015 NPL Finals in Westfield, Ind.
On the girls side, three different clubs claimed four championships to already cement their qualification to this summer’s NPL Finals. Juventus Avanza clinched the U-19 age group with a win over Galaxy Blues to add a new face to the NPL Finals mix, as Juventus Avanza has never before participated in the NPL’s nationwide culminating tournament.
Marin FC 98 Blue defeated Davis Legacy 98 to claim its second consecutive U-17 girls championship. During the 2014 NPL Finals, Marin FC 97 Blue lost only to eventual champion PDA in a strong showing more than 2,000 miles from home.
Placer United Gold laid claim to both the U-15 and U-16 trophies. The U-15 team won both its matches and benefitted from a draw between Santa Clara Sporting and Davis Legacy to defy the odds and punch its ticket to Indiana. Meanwhile, the U-16 team also tallied six points through results over De Anza Black and Mustang Velocity to win its age group. As a club, Placer United SC is a force in the NPL ranks, as its U-17 boys team won an NPL national championship this past summer.
